- Avoid long, hot, steamy showers or baths.

- Soaps, especially many antibacterial soaps, can be very drying. Only mild soaps & body washes should be used such as Dove, Vanicream, or Eucerin. Soapless cleansers like Cetaphil, Cerave, or Aquanil are also good.

- It is not always necessary to shower every day. Using soap only on needed areas, such as the underarms, groin, and feet is sufficient most of the time.

- An in-shower body lotion (like Oil of Olay) can be used at the end of your shower, like a conditioner for your skin.

- After you bathe or shower, while the skin is still damp, you may apply your prescribed medicated cream or ointment to affected areas, and then apply a moisturizing cream or ointment. If you do not have a prescribed product, just apply the moisturizer.

- Try to use a moisturizing cream or ointment at least twice a day and any other time as needed. If you are using a prescription  product, apply the moisturizing cream or ointment over the medicated product as directed.

- If you are NOT having problems with your skin, you may use any moisturizer you like. However, dry skin usually requires a CREAM or OINTMENT, which is oil based, rather than a lotion.

- Some recommendations:

  • Aveeno cream Cetaphil cream Curel cream Eucerin cream
  • CeraVe cream Vanicream Vaseline Aquaphor

- If your skin is very itchy, you may try a lotion such as Sarna, Eucerin Anti-Itch, or Aveeno Anti-Itch products.

- For areas of thicker, drier skin, use a moisturizing cream/ointment with lactic acid, salicylic acid, or urea. Examples include Am-Lactin, Eucerin Professional Repair, CeraVe SA cream, or LacHydrin. (Note: these may burn if you have open cracks – you can fill the cracks with Vaseline before applying.)

- Many people with sensitive skin are allergic to Vitamin E, tea tree oil, fragrances, antibiotic ointments (like Neosporin, Bacitracin, & Triple Antibiotic) and other ingredients. If you have sensitive skin you should avoid these products.
